Sand Gate Lane end to Kents Bank Sands - Distance 3 miles

It is likely that this measured walk followed on directly after arriving at Sand Gate Lane end on Route No 7 from Cark. At half a mile “ye Libertis of Flouckborow”are reached at the top of the hill where there are distinct changes in field levels. All the way through the village, to the “End of Liberties”[at Green Lane] a distance of 737 yards between Liberties, were dwellings and barns at each side of the road. ( A liberty was an area situated outside the borough in which the freemen had certain rights of pasture etc)

There were two Wain gate lanes to the sands and a moor lane off by the chapel. Flookburgh was at one time, a market town of some importance, largely because it was situated on the cross bay route between Lancaster and Furness. Flookburgh was able to hold a market and two annual fairs. The market cross stands in a small square near the roadside 20 yards beyond the chapel.

Flookburgh’s parish church, dedicated to St John, is now a few hundred yards up the Cark road. The large square was formed when the chapel was demolished and the graveyard transferred in the early twentieth century. Another half a mile on past the “Dubbs”[pond] was “Utterthwaite” Hall set back 55 yards from the road. There were twelve houses in “part of Allethwait” before the lane “to ye wike Creek” and nearly a mile before Kents Bank Sands
